- " Chile revolutionary movement" (07/12/70): The Leftist Revolutionary Movement (MIR) is the largest and best organized of Chile's ultra-left groups. It is estimated that the NIR numbers approximately 500 hard-core militants, and the membership may total as many as 1,000. It is estimated further that the MIR may be able to mobilize a few thousand more supporters. There is no unified Socialist view of the MIR. The Allende wing rejects the strong-arm tactics as counter-productive and urges political compromise. The more radical Altamirano wing has close ties with the MIR and has even helped establish several guerrilla training schools.
- " Times article exaggerates appeal of revolutionnary group" (14/01/70): Both the prospects for violent revolution and the appeal of the extremist Movement of the Revolutionary Left (MIR) are far more miniscule than suggested in a recent article by Jose Yolesias. Writing in the January 11 issue of the New York Times Magazine, Yolesias includes assertions by Chileans to the effect that theirs is a hiqhly politicized country which abhors violence; but his lengthv and synmpathetic treatment of the MIR indicates that he may have missed the point. MIR threatens Orthodox Leftists but little else. As a dedicated and clandestine organization which refuses to compromise, the MIR does have some anneal. Somewhat ironically, however, this appeal poses; a threat principally to the orthodox leftist parties, whose participation in the current political system is scorned by the more zealous and impatient of Chile's youths. The number thus attracted, nevertheless, remains small, and th MIR appears unlikely to exert any meaningful national influence in the foreseeable future.
- " MIR calls for more street demonstrations" (04/06/73) : Movement of Revolutionary Left (MlR) issued statement
April 5 (text in FBIS) acknowledging its members together with Socialist and MAPU militants had taken, part in "street mobilization" of previous day to demand distribution, of "people's market-basket, " establishment of "people's control over food distribution, and Govt-control of CENADI and lndus Lever. Pres Allende in his alarmist and menacing-April 3.speech "distorted" objectives of this mobilisation, statement continued thereby setting stage for "brutal repression",by police 24 hours later.
